Crystal methamphetamine, often called “meth”, is a very destructive drug which has a well-deserved, negative reputation. Crystal meth is known for causing serious and in some situations, irreversible damage physically and mentally. When people think of meth and meth users, they usually focus on the damage that the individual will likely inflict on themselves. However, it is not just the meth users which are experiencing some of the negative influences of the drug. Their families, their friends, partners and anyone that they are close to will experience some issues because of their meth use.
Meth is a very potent stimulant drug in the amphetamine group. Amphetamines are potent substances and can be very addictive. Meth has several effects both positive and negative. Some of its effects are:
- Extreme stimulation, productivity and increased motivation
- Feelings of being excited and euphoria
- Lack of appetite
- Severe insomnia
- Paranoia and anxiety
- Mood changes and instability
- Dilated pupils
- High heart rate
Some users find these effects enjoyable and can lead them to becoming addicted to meth. Meth is also known for causing various issues in the mental and physical health of a person. Long term use could lead to issues such as:
- Cognitive damage and difficulty learning or remembering things
- Long-term depression and mood issues which require therapy to manage
- Lung damage for users who smoke
- Damage to nostrils for users who ingest the drug
- Damage to organs and other important bodily systems
- Scars, bleeding and scabs
- Addiction, tolerance and dependence
A lot of these issues especially those that affect mental health, could cause problems in the relationships of the users. Among the most challenging things to deal with in a relationship is addiction and dependence.
Nobody who is addicted to crystal meth decided that they wanted to become an addict. The problem is, some of the powerful effects of the drug could be very addictive, which leads some people to develop problems with the drug. Jade Recovery has noted that a lot of the first-time meth users find that the drug helps them manage the symptoms of their mental illness. People who struggle with certain mental health problems like depression, social anxiety or self-confidence issues, could find that the crystal meth gives a boost to confidence and motivation which makes them feel more comfortable.
While it is true that this band-aid approach is not going to help the problem in the long run, some people are not aware of this or do not really believe the dangers associated with the drug. This could lead them to using it repeatedly, believing that it is a viable option for helping them treat their emotional or mental problems. In reality, this is not the case. Anybody who uses a substance to cover up or manage an emotional or mental health problem is still going to need to address the root cause of the uneasiness. If they do not, they will just continue to use the drug by relapsing.
This is how a lot of people develop an addiction. Instead of addressing the mental health issues, they find the easy way out by using drugs. They then associate the drugs with feelings of well-being. After doing this for a long enough period, they will start to develop a psychological dependence. This means that they are going to begin to believe that they really need the drug to feel happy or comfortable. At this point, they are going to feel even more unhappy if they are not using the drug than they ever did before they used it.
Not everybody who uses crystal meth immediately gets addicted to it. While the majority of individuals who use the drug eventually develop an addiction if they do not seek help or stop using it soon, even those who are still in the process of developing an addiction are going to likely experience some changes in their relationships. Casual meth users could experience relationship issues just like any other casual drug user experiences problems. Meth tends to make people extremely sexually aroused. This could lead to difficulty in personal relationships since a person will be more likely to engage in sexual activity with others.
